A rare condition called post orgasmic illness syndrome (POIS) hits men who may be allergic to their own semen, Dutch researchers say. POIS sufferers experience flu-like symptoms after having sex, with fever, runny nose, extreme fatigue and burning eyes starting minutes after climax and lasting for up to a week. Scientists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands performed two studies on 45 male POIS sufferers. In the first study, they injected a small amount of the subjects’ own semen to perform a standard allergy skin-prick test, and found an 88% allergy reaction rate. A follow-up study on two of the volunteers showed that the condition may be successfully treated with immunotherapy, which involves allergy shots gradually exposing the subjects to greater amounts of their offending semen.
