Scientists predict that in vitro fertilization will become the top choice for conceiving a child within the next decade and sex will take a backseat to the process. Natural human reproduction has been referred to as “a fairly inefficient process” whereas in vitro fertilization is advancing to the point of having a success rate of nearly 100%. For women in their late 30s, and early 40s who put off having children to further their careers, this option may be a quicker way to get that baby they are finally ready for without possible years of trying with their partner. Researchers studied young men going to an STD clinic and discovered that couples rarely stop intercourse to add lubricants to condoms. Long sessions of intercourse can cause vaginal dryness or condom lubrication to dry out, which increases the chance the condom will break and/or slip leading to STIs and unwanted pregnancies. If you’re doing more than a quickie, take the time to lube up. If things are drying up halfway through take the opportunity to pull out, re-lube, and then try a different position.

A relic found in a cave in Germany is believed to be the world’s oldest sex toy. The 30,000-year-old prehistoric siltstone phallus has carved rings around one polished end, which would have been used as a dildo, and also has markings on the other end indicating that it was used as a tool to ignite fires with a flint say scientists at the University of Tubingen. The phallus was pieced together from several fragments found in the cave after being discarded by its ancient owner because it had been broken. No way to tell if it was broken from overuse as a sex toy or from mishandling during lighting a fire. Read more

Americans over 45 are more open to the idea of sex outside of marriage now than they were ten years ago. They may be more open to the idea, but they also report having sex less frequently and with less satisfaction, too. Financial stress is mostly to blame for hitting the sheets for love less often. Compared to a survey conducted in 1999 where 41% of respondents said non-marital sex was wrong, the new survey shows only 22% of people believe sex without marriage is taboo. For the 45+ crowd, however, only 28% claimed to have sex at least once a week, with 40% having it at least once a month. Both figures are down about 10% from a survey conducted in 2004 for the same age group.
